DIAKRIT’s Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer, Fredrik Bergman, today announced that the company will donate THB 230,000 to Kids Ark Foundation as part of DIAKRIT’s annual charity project: DIAKRIT Giving Back.
The project is a collaborative effort by the company and its employees to support, develop and promote the foundation’s work in northern Thailand. Since its beginning in 2000, Kids Ark Foundation has been committed to helping children whose lives have been affected by poverty and/or HIV/AIDS in northern Thailand.
“We know that the profitable growth of our company depends on, among other things, the social sustainability of our communities across the world,” says Fredrik Bergman. “And we know it is in our best interests to contribute to the sustainability of those communities, which is why we support visionary non-profit organizations such as Kids Ark Foundation.”
The foundation serves more than 500 disadvantaged children. Through DIAKRIT Giving Back, the whole company raised much needed funds to help the foundation develop its facilities and programs further, thus providing even better care for the children.
In August 2015, DIAKRIT held a charity run, which was hosted at Bangkok’s Benjakitti Park. Employees and families all gathered to run for a good cause and donate to the foundation. Two staff members were selected as DIAKRIT ambassadors to visit Kids Ark Foundation in Chiang Mai to learn more about the foundation’s work and what DIAKRIT can do to contribute, as well as hand over the annual Christmas donations the company and its staff raised for the children of Kids Ark. In addition to the funds raised during the charity run, additional contributions were collected from DIAKRIT’s donation boxes throughout their offices in Thailand and Scandinavia.
First virtual-reality experience
During the visit to Kids Ark, DIAKRIT’s ambassadors brought VR gear for the children to try. At first, the children looked at each other and giggled over how goofy they looked from the outside, waving about nonsensically. But after trying virtual reality themselves, they were quickly gasping at the experience.
VR is a technology that can allow people to experience places they might not otherwise see. The main use of VR for DIAKRIT is to enable a relocating home buyer to view a new house from the comfort of their old one. In this case, however, DIAKRIT used it to let the children of Kids Ark experience something that took them beyond their daily lives in poverty.
The children used the VR gear provided by DIAKRIT to explore and experience a typical western home. The children were awestruck by the experience. “What’s a kitchen? What’s a living room?” were questions asked by some of the children to whom such things were unfamiliar, since they are used to living in single room homes. DIAKRIT also showed them virtual reality visuals of Paris, London, New York and Rome, with the children becoming completely mesmerized by the experience of actually “being there” and seeing these places for themselves.
“The opportunity to raise money for and visit Kids Ark Foundation to meet with the children is a big win for our organization,” Bergman said. “Being able to offer inspiring ways to encourage young people who might need extra support, is a huge privilege and one we are all passionate about. For the last 11 years, DIAKRIT has been happy to offer a helping hand to the children of Kids Ark in hopes that we are helping to pave the way for them to have a better, brighter future”.
About Kids Ark Foundation
Kids Ark Foundation is a registered non-profit organization with no religious or political affiliations. Started in 2000 by Rita Holm Gustafsson and Allan Gustafsson, registered as a foundation in 2002, it is committed to helping disadvantaged children whose lives have been affected by poverty and/or HIV/AIDS. Kids Ark is based in northwest Thailand where it works closely with local authorities to supplement existing education programs. Over the years it has grown to where it now serves over 500 children.
The project aims to fulfil children’s basic needs and interests under three headings: a right to health, a right to education, and a right to grow up in a safe environment.
Kids Ark supports vulnerable children through after-school and early education programs; organizes child sponsorship; assists families and communities by promoting income-generating activities that foster sustainable development, and advocates for children’s rights. Keeping children in familiar surroundings with their extended families, instead of in institutions, is the hallmark of Kids Ark.
Kids Ark’s objectives are: to raise awareness among children and youth of opportunities for education and further professional training and help them integrate professionally into mainstream Thai society; to optimize children’s physical, psychological and social development in order to build self-belief and protect them from harm; to provide sustainable income-generation for groups of village women, some of whom HIV-positive, and at the same time ensure the continuance of ancient handicraft skills by bridging the gap between the village women and the market.
